Inside FinQ’s First Quantum Algorithm Journal Club
Twelve participants and five member-led sessions, moving from quantum simulation and benchmarking to coding challenges and reinforcement learning.

FinQ’s first Quantum Algorithm Journal Club was designed as a small working cohort: twelve people returning every two weeks to explain difficult material, compare interpretations and learn from one another.
A cohort, not a webinar
Each Monday-evening meeting paired a roughly 25-minute member presentation with about 20 minutes of discussion. Presenters did more than summarize a paper; they gave the group a path into its central idea, assumptions and implications.
The recurring format created accountability and shared context. The same people returned, took turns leading, and carried questions and supporting material from one session into the next.
Five sessions
Session 1 · January 10 — Daiwei Zhu opened the cohort, introduced the working rhythm and led the first paper discussion.
Session 2 · January 24 — Qi Zhao presented Taylor-expansion quantum simulation using linear combinations of unitaries, breaking the method into its mathematical ingredients, circuit construction and resource implications.
Session 3 · February 7 — Lin Mao introduced standard randomized benchmarking and the practical problem of estimating quantum-gate performance.
Session 4 · February 28 — Xinwen Wang walked through the final problem from the IBM Quantum Challenge with a companion notebook, shifting the group from reading results to inspecting an implementation.
Session 5 · March 7 — The cohort closed with variational quantum reinforcement learning, bringing parameterized quantum circuits into conversation with hybrid machine-learning workflows.
What the format made possible
Across five sessions, the group moved from foundational simulation methods and hardware evaluation to coding practice and quantum machine learning. The range mattered: it let participants see quantum algorithms not as isolated papers, but as a connected technical landscape.
The Journal Club became one of FinQ’s earliest repeatable formats for member-led learning—a place where understanding was built by explaining, questioning and returning to the work together.
