Quantum chemistry simulation is one of the most promising directions for achieving practical quantum advantage. For people interested in understanding the basic of quantum chemistry and its implementation, we start this three-lecture workshop. Through this workshop audiences will develop intuitions in the quantum mechanics and chemistry concepts. Such intuitions can be an anchor point for interdisciplinary collaborations or a starting point for further self-study.
Lecture 1 will cover the basic concepts in quantum chemistry, including: basis set, spin orbital, Slater determinant, Hartree-Fock, and full configuration interaction (FCI).
Lecture 2 explains the popular method to map a quantum chemistry problem into a variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) problem, including: second quantization, Jordan Wigner transformation, Trotterization, and unitary to quantum circuit mapping.
Lecture 3 will demonstrate the typical workflow for running the VQE simulation on a laptop. You will learn how to get approach actual quantum chemistry problems with Psi4, Cirq and OpenFermion.
OUR SPEAKER
Qingfeng (Kee) Wang is a Ph.D. candidate in chemical physics at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is currently physically located at Duke Quantum Center, under the supervision of Dr. Chris Monroe. He got his master’s degree in computational chemistry at Emory University in 2018. Kee has been collaborating with IonQ since 2018 on improving variational quantum eigensolver, resulting in two patents.
