Quantum Simulation and computation on many-body systems has branched to two complementary strategies over the last two decades. The top-down strategy uses ensembles of many particles with control over global interactions, where the granular details can be ignored and the ensemble can be treated as a smooth medium. The bottom-up strategy uses high-fidelity control over individual particles and builds large many-body systems by assembling them together. In this talk, I will talk about both approaches with Bose-Einstein condensates in the top-down approach and trapped ions in the bottom-up approach. Building on the interacting atomic quantum system, we will talk about investigating interesting physics ranging from condensed matter to cosmology, such as quantum phase transition, spin domain confinement, many-body localizations and even Unruh radiations.
主讲人介绍: Dr. Lei Feng works on quantum simulation and quantum computing at Duke University. His current postdoctoral research focuses on building a new generation of programmable quantum computing platform using trapped Yb ions. Lei got his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago on quantum simulation using ultra-cold neutral atoms, where Bose-Einstein Condensation is used to study phase transitions and matter-wave radiations. He is also a winner of Sidney Nagel Prize for Creativity in Research and the OCPA Outstanding Dissertation Award.
